This Remembrance Day will be an unforgettable one for St. Michael Catholic Academy student Sonja Csik as she prepares to fly to London to meet the Queen of England.
The grade 6 York Catholic District School Board student’s road to Buckingham Palace began when she won her local Royal Canadian Legion’s annual art and literacy contest. Her submission also went on to win both provincial and national contests as well.
“The poppy is the national symbol for Remembrance Day,” Sonja said of the artwork she entered into the contest. “And I just made the soldiers’ coat, helmet and rifle.”
After winning the national competition Sonja’s artwork was submitted to an international competition called Never Such Innocence. There, Sonja beat out 1,100 entrants representing 47 countries to win second place and an invitation to an award presentation at Buckingham Palace where she will meet the Queen.
“We were so excited and so proud of our student’s achievement,” said St. Michael principal Dayna Fitzpatrick. “Looking forward to her coming back and sharing all the exciting stories.”
Sonja’s poster is currently on display at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa where it will hang until June 2019.
Let’s all join together to congratulate Sonja on her Royal invitation and recognize her moving piece of art this Remembrance Day.
