There is a wave of calm spreading across Ontario Catholic schools, as students, teachers and administrators learn about and engage in Christian meditation.

At the forefront of the push for peaceful reflection in the classroom are Halton, Hamilton, Toronto and Brant Haldimand Norfolk

Catholic District School Boards who have banded together to reach out across the country, offering training and spreading word of the positive effects.  BHNCDSB itself has compiled a book of student reflections and illustrations, each expressing what Christian meditation means for them.

The book, called Christian Meditation Reflections, has been so well received that the board is now working to have it available internationally, so more schools and students can reap the benefits of a taking moment to feel God’s love.

Christian meditation, a practice which the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario has given its support, made its way to BHNCDSB with a 2014 pilot project at St. Mary’s School in Hagersville.

“It really did ignite from that,” said Keri Calvesbert, Student Achievement Consultant with BHNCDSB. The board now practices meditation in all elementary schools, and with the Religion department’s curriculum for secondary students.

While some were skeptical that a class of youngsters would sit still long enough to meditate, the feedback has been glowing

“Our students articulate that Christian meditation allows them to focus on the presence of God in their lives,” said Calvesbert. ““It really is that experience of the presence of God . . . To be silent and feel the Holy Spirit working through them.”
