A life not lived for others is not a life.
These words embody the spirit of Saint Teresa of Calcutta, a distinct leader among the Catholic community who demonstrates what it means to be a Christian. And this past month, the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board celebrated the renaming of Mother Teresa School in Walkerton in recognition of the canonization of Saint Teresa of Calcutta.
Bishop Miehm quoted Saint Teresa in his sermon saying, “Let us always meet each other with a smile, for a smile is the beginning of love.” Students and staff alike were reminded that the greatest way to honour St. Teresa and her works is through living a life of love as she did.
Events began with mass at Sacred Heart Parish Walkerton, followed by the official blessing and dedication at the school by Bishop Meihm. Among the guests were representatives from the Missionaries of Charity in Toronto – established in 1950 by Saint Teresa herself.
Saint Teresa is a role model throughout all faiths across the world. She embodies the values that Catholic education instils in its students every day: serve the needs of your communities.
Whether locally or globally, every student can make a difference in a community when they use the principles their taught, and follow the lead of amazing role models like Saint Teresa.
